Paint protection film (PPF) needs only a few habits to stay clear and glossy: wait before the first wash, hand wash gently, keep water jets away from the film edges, and never wipe dust off a dry car. This guide explains how to maintain your car after PPF installation, from the first week to the years after, with extra tips for Saudi heat and dust.
The first week after PPF installation
The first few days are when the film is easiest to damage. Installers fit PPF in Saudi Arabia using a water-based solution, and that moisture needs time to dry out from under the film. Until it does, the edges can lift.
Follow these rules in the first week:
- Do not wash the car for 2 to 3 days. XPEL asks owners to wait 48 hours before the first wash. 3M asks for 72 hours. Ask your installer which film is on your car and follow that brand’s time.
- Keep pressure washers away for 7 days. 3M warns that a strong jet aimed at the edges can make new film lift during this period.
- Leave small bubbles or haze alone. These are usually trapped moisture and often clear on their own as the film settles. If they are still there after two weeks, show them to your installer.
- Don’t touch the edges. Picking at a corner or pressing on an edge can break the seal before the adhesive is fully set.
- Let dust sit for now. If a dusty wind covers the car, leave it. A rinse after the waiting period is safer than a wipe today.
How to wash a car with PPF
Hand washing is the safest method. Both 3M and XPEL recommend it over any machine wash.
- Pick the right time. Wash early in the morning or after sunset. XPEL advises against wiping or scrubbing the film in direct sun or when it is hot. In Madinah summers, panels left in the sun get hot enough to dry soap in seconds.
- Rinse first. Use plenty of low-pressure water to float off sand and dust before anything touches the film.
- Use a gentle shampoo. Choose a pH-neutral car shampoo (one that is neither acidic nor strongly alkaline) with no added colour. 3M notes that some shampoos, including ones used at commercial car washes, contain dyes or harsh chemicals that can stain the film.
- Use two buckets and a microfibre mitt. One bucket holds soapy water, the other holds clean water for rinsing the mitt. This stops grit going back onto the car. Work from the roof down.
- Dry straight away. Use a soft, clean microfibre towel. If water dries on its own in the heat, it can leave mineral spots.
Using a pressure washer safely
You can use one once the first week has passed. Keep the nozzle at least 1 metre (about 3 feet) from the film, as XPEL advises. Use a wide fan spray, not a narrow jet. 3M’s installation guide sets a maximum of 80 bar.
Most of all, never point the spray straight at a film edge. Spray along the edge, not into it, so water can’t get under the film.
Automatic car washes
Avoid brush car washes, including the quick ones at petrol stations. 3M says brushes can dull and scratch the film and lift its edges. If you have no other option, a touchless wash is the better choice.
Dust is the biggest daily risk
Saudi dust is fine, hard grit. Wiping it off a dry car with a cloth or a feather duster works like sandpaper and leaves fine scratches in the top layer of the film.
The National Center for Meteorology regularly issues dust warnings for parts of the Madinah region, so this happens often. After a dusty day:
- Rinse with low-pressure water first, then wash as normal.
- If you can’t use water, use a waterless wash or quick detailer spray that says it is safe for PPF. Spray a lot of product, wipe with light pressure in one direction, and turn the towel to a clean side often.
Bird droppings, tree sap and fuel spills
Remove these as soon as you see them. Heat bakes them onto the surface and makes stains harder to remove.
- Bird droppings: lay a wet microfibre cloth on the spot for a minute to soften it, then lift it off. Don’t scrub.
- Tree sap: 3M suggests soaking it with hot, soapy water for several minutes, then rinsing.
- Fuel: 3M says to wipe fuel spills off right away, then wash and dry the area.
A small kit in the boot helps: a bottle of PPF-safe quick detailer and two clean microfibre cloths.
Wax and ceramic coating on PPF
You can protect the film itself. 3M says regular waxing helps keep the film glossy and makes stains easier to remove. If wax builds up along the edges, clear it with a soft brush or cotton bud.
Two things to avoid on PPF:
- Coloured or dyed waxes, which can stain the film.
- Polishing compounds and other abrasive products, which can wear down the top layer.
Many owners add a ceramic coating on top of the film. The coating makes water bead and roll off, so dust and dirt rinse away more easily. Ask your installer whether the coating they offer is suitable for your film.
What self-healing can and cannot fix
Most good films have a self-healing top layer. Light swirl marks and fine scratches fade when the film is warmed by the sun or warm water. In a Saudi summer, a few hours parked outside often does this for you.
Self-healing has limits. A deep cut from a stone, or a scratch that goes through the film, will not heal. That section needs to be replaced by a professional.
A simple PPF care schedule
Use this as a starting point and adjust it to how and where you drive.
| When | What to do |
|---|---|
| Days 1 to 3 | No washing. Confirm the exact waiting time for your film brand |
| Days 1 to 7 | No pressure washer near the film |
| Every 1 to 2 weeks | Hand wash, more often in dusty months |
| After every dust storm | Rinse with low-pressure water before any wiping |
| Every few months | Apply a PPF-safe sealant or spray coating and check all edges |
| Once a year | Get a professional check at your installer |
Signs your PPF needs a professional check
Book an inspection if you notice any of these:
- Edges that are lifting or collecting a dark line of dirt
- New bubbles that appear weeks after installation
- Yellow, cloudy or dull patches
- Cuts or tears from stones or other impacts
Don’t try to fix these yourself with a heat gun or a blade. You can damage the paint underneath. XPEL states that regular maintenance protects your warranty, so check your warranty card for the care rules it expects you to follow.
Next step
If your film is new, follow the first-week rules and plan your first hand wash. If you are not sure which film is on your car, what your warranty covers, or whether an edge looks right, contact Auto Armor Studio in Madinah and ask for a film check.
